Step 1
Fill the Mate Cup
Start by filling your mate cup (also known as a "gourd") with yerba mate leaves about two-thirds full.
Step 2
Shake and Tilt
Gently shake the cup to bring the finer particles to the top, then tilt the cup to one side, creating a slope of yerba leaves.
Step 3
Add Cool Water
Pour a little cool water into the lower (empty) side of the cup and let it absorb into the leaves for a few moments. This step protects the flavor.
Step 4
Insert the Bombilla
Place the bombilla (a metal straw with a filter at the end) into the wet side of the yerba mate.
Step 5
Add Hot Water
Pour hot, not boiling, 70ºC - 80ºC (158ºF - 176ºF) water into the cup, on the same side as the bombilla. Your mate is ready to sip!
